The Selby Area School District is moving closer to a decision on whether to transition to a four-day school week, with a public meeting scheduled for Monday, March 9th, at 6:30 p.m. in the Selby Area School Gym. A vote by the Selby Area School Board will follow at the March board meeting, which has been rescheduled to Tuesday, March 10th, at 7:00 p.m.
Over the past several months, the district’s Four-Day School Week Committee — composed of district staff, administration, school board members, and community representatives — has examined the proposal in detail. The committee reviewed research and data from other South Dakota districts currently operating on a four-day schedule and has examined the potential benefits and challenges of a four-day school week.
The review focused on several key areas, including student academic performance, student support systems, staff recruitment and retention, financial considerations, transportation, and extracurricular scheduling. The committee also analyzed how comparable districts have structured their calendars and what results they have reported since implementing a four-day school week.
Community input has been an important part of the process. Two parent surveys have been conducted, and those results have been carefully reviewed by the committee. The March 9th public meeting will allow residents an opportunity to hear a summary of the committee’s findings, ask questions, and provide feedback before the board makes its final decision.
Information regarding a potential calendar, daily schedule adjustments, and additional details about the proposed four-day school week is available on the district’s website at www.selby.k12.sd.us.
The board’s decision is expected to have a broad impact on students, families, staff, and the community as a whole. Community members are encouraged to attend the public meeting and remain informed as the district prepares for the upcoming vote.
