Beginning July 1, 2026, a new South Dakota law (HB 1082) eliminates the cost of reduced-price school breakfasts and lunches for students attending public school districts.
What this means for families:
Students who qualify for
reduced-price meals will now receive breakfast and lunch at no cost. The cost for seconds is NOT covered by this program and still remains the responsibility of the family.
Families must still complete a Free and Reduced-Price Meal Application
to determine eligibility.
The application process remains important because schools are required to identify students who qualify for reduced-price meals, and the State of South Dakota will reimburse public school districts for those meals.
If you believe your family may qualify, we encourage you to submit an application as soon as possible. Applications are available through the USDA Free and Reduced-Price Meal Program or by contacting the Selby Area School District Business Office. Each family will be receiving an application in the mail (from the Selby Area School with in the next 2 weeks).
If you have any questions about meal eligibility or the application process, please contact the Selby Area School District Business Office. We encourage all eligible families to apply so they can take advantage of this benefit.
