The Herreid and Selby Area School Districts are committed to providing a safe environment for our student-athletes. As part of that commitment, we utilize ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) as one tool to assist in the evaluation and management of concussions involving our middle school and high school athletes.
ImPACT is a computerized assessment that measures memory, attention, processing speed, and reaction time. Baseline testing provides information about an athlete’s normal cognitive functioning before injury. If a student-athlete later sustains a suspected concussion, healthcare professionals may use the baseline results, along with a medical evaluation and other information, to help assess recovery and make informed return-to-play decisions.
It is important to understand that ImPACT testing does not diagnose a concussion and is not a substitute for evaluation by a qualified healthcare professional. Rather, it provides another valuable piece of information that can assist healthcare providers, families, coaches, and school personnel in making decisions that prioritize the health and safety of our student-athletes.
The following information outlines the Herreid and Selby Area School District’s procedures for ImPACT testing, including who will be tested, when testing will occur, and how results may be used following a suspected concussion.
Permission forms will be sent home with each student-athlete by the end of this week. The goal is to have the ImPact testing completed by the end of next week. Thank you for your cooperation and participation.
