High School Students Enter The Governor's Art Show

Artists at Selby Area School have been given a rare opportunity to enter an art show. The Governor’s Student Art Competition was started up by South Dakota governor, Kristi Noem, in association with the South Dakota Arts Council. It is a national competition, open to students from all grades. The high school students entering this show are: Kai Bieber (Senior), Harleigh Hauge (Senior), Mason Hovey (Senior), Erik Loeckel (Junior), Ava Schanzenbach (Junior), Erica Stagnolia (Junior), and Sophia Von Wald (Senior). This competition is an exciting opportunity for these students. We interviewed a few of the students who are participating in the art show to find out how they are feeling.

Kai Bieber

“What piece are you submitting to the art show?”
It is an oil pastel painting of a brain. It represents the difference between people who are intuitively creative and people who are intuitively intelligent, and how the two can clash.

“How are you feeling about the opportunity to be a part of this art show?”
I’m genuinely excited about it, but I don’t think it’s going to go anywhere. I’m not very hopeful.

Erica Stagnolia

“What piece are you submitting to the art show?
It’s a painting I did of my grandpa. I chose it because it was the best-looking painting I’ve made so far, and it has sentimental value to it.

“How are you feeling about the opportunity to be a part of this art show?”
I’m honored, but I know I’m not good enough to win it. But, it’s fun to be a part of it anyway.

Sophia Von Wald

“What piece are you submitting to the art show?
It’s a line art drawing. I like how it turned out, and I feel like the people at the art show will like it, too.

“How are you feeling about the opportunity to be a part of this art show?”
I’m really happy to be involved in this art show.

Mason Hovey

“What piece are you submitting to the art show?
I'm submitting my piece called 'Marvel at Nature'. I chose the piece because not only was it one of my better works, but it was more meaningful to me.

“How are you feeling about the opportunity to be a part of this art show?”
I think it's pretty cool, even though I'm not the greatest artist, and I'm thankful for the opportunity.

These students are very humble, but we have seen their beautiful artwork and we are confident that their pieces will impress the judges of this competition. We wish all of the artists good luck! Students whose work is selected for the 2022 exhibition will be notified in early December 2021, and an announcement of the competition results will be made in early January 2022.
