Art Students Visit John Lopez

Research-based projects. I want my students to make new connections and understand a topic. Understanding why they are doing a project is fundamental for children and young people's cognitive and cultural development. I had my students do a documented research project to avoid mere memorization. For example, I introduced three artists from three countries with my Recyclable Sculpture lesson, then we compared and contrasted in group discussions. Then the students made preliminary sketches and collaborated for input. After completing their projects, they documented their process and described how our three artists influenced them. In this particular lesson, we met one of the artists we discussed at the lesson's beginning - John Lopez. Students researched the artist's work and had questions prepared for when they met him today. Students had their projects bound in a booklet, and Mr. Lopez was generous enough to sign all of them.
