The Wolverines' volleyball team competed at the Sodak 16 game on Tuesday the 11th. They played the Burke Cougars. This was a very intense game with both teams constantly firing back at each other. The winner for this game advances to the State Championship, so it was a long battle. Going into the first set, the Wolverines started off strong and won 25-18 showing Burke that they are here to win. In the second set, Burke put up a very big fight, wanting to stand their ground, and they won that set with a score of 25-12. But that did not discourage the Wolverines, and in the third set they made a comeback and won a very close match of 25-23. Then in the 4th set, Burke still stood their ground and won a close set as well winning it 25-21. Then the final set came up - the 5th set - and for the 5th set, the score only goes to 15 instead of 25. The Wolverines and Cougars were battling this one out. The score was 14-13 with HSA in the lead when the Cougars went to spike it, and Katie Allbee blocked it, leading the Wolverines to a win with a score of 15-13. The crowd went crazy when that happened. Most of us lost our voices from how much we were cheering and yelling throughout this game. We had a huge cheering/ student section watching this game and supporting the Wolverines. The girls are now off to the State Championship in Rapid City next Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Good job and good luck Wolverines' Volleyball!

State Cross Country just got over and it was a lot of fun. The state meet was in Huron, but we still made sure to make the most of it. We all hung out and played a bunch of games to keep us occupied the day before. We also walked around the course, memorizing where certain meter marks were at. This course at Huron wasn’t an easy one; it is a pretty hilly course, but everyone still pushed through. In the girls’ varsity race there were over 110 runners. Evelyn Shearer got 30th place and Jentry Hubner got 43rd place. Brynnly Huber got 65th place, Anniah Russell got 77th place, and Ella Perman got 105th place. Overall, the girls did very well because this was a tough course and there were tough weather conditions with the wind and cold.
For the boys’ varsity race, there were over 120 runners. Gavin Hirsch got 5th place overall. This was a tougher race for me because I did not run as good as I was expecting or capable of. Sam Ernst got 94th place and Jack Huffman got 116th place. Will Stiegelmeier got 117th place and Faren Nelson got 121st place. The top 5 boys in this race are all amazing runners, and all had the potential to win this race. If we ran this race 5 different times on 5 different days, there would have been a different winner each time. I just want to say congratulations to the Philip boys for getting 1st place as a team for the 4th year in a row, and I am looking forward to seeing them in track season this spring.
Since it is my senior year, I am hoping for nothing but the best for my whole team next year. The last four years were the best years of my life and I am really going to miss high school cross country, this team, and all the friends I have made along the way from this sport, but it is time to start the new journey going into college sports. Another shoutout to Coach Yackley who always holds the team up, pushes them to do their best, and makes sure to make everyone laugh. I couldn’t have asked for a better high school cross country experience and career. To everyone else on the team, I am going to continue to be cheering you on and I will come watch as many races as I can. Never forget to keep pushing to do your best, and go make everyone proud.

Go Wolverines!

The Selby Area Volleyball girls had a great game against South Border. Junior Varsity and Varsity won their games. A couple of new personal records were set, as Alyssa Kaup had hit her one thousand digs mark as a sophomore. Then Katie Albee reached her 1,000 assists milestone as a junior. The girls knew they had it made from the start of the games, as confidence and morale were high.

Sophomore Alyssa Kaup stated, “I am so proud of Katie on her 1000 assists, as well as this team staying together even though we knew it was going to be a slower game. Just keeping the mentality of state in the back of our minds every time we step on the court, I think, is really important to really go places.” Alyssa Kaup

“We were very proud of the win, and I'm proud of our team," says sophomore Briley Helm.

Sophomore Gracin Thorstenson added, “When we trust each other and have energy throughout the game, everything comes together."

It was a good game for Selby Area High School. The first set was 25-9. The second set was 25-17 with South Border coming out strong, but the Wolverines finished the set. The third set was 25- 8. The Wolverines needed to finish this set to win the game and they sure did! Everyone played together and had great energy. This game showed that these girls are an unstoppable force, not to be reckoned with.
